So, your blog is starting to get some serious traffic and the costs of maintaining the blog, including your time, is increasing, or perhaps, you want to make your blog your job and therefore, you are now looking for ways to earn money from your blog. Here is a list of 10 ways to earn money from your blog:

1. Advertising

Selling advertising space on a blog is probably the most common form of earning money from a blog and you’ve probably seen it countless amount of times.

You could sell text, banner and / or overlay popup ads and on two different basis: cost-per-click (CPC) and cost per mille (CPM); where per mille means per thousand.

For CPC ads, you will earn money every time someone clicks on the ad. The amount earned is based on a percentage of the company’s advertising budget. It is hard to predict the amount you could potentially make, but you could earn a good amount of money.

Companies that offer CPC ads are Google Adsense and

CPM ads are where you earn money for every thousand page impressions, regardless of the amount of clicks the ad gets. The amount you make is dependent on your expectations or the industry average your blog is in. Typically, you can expect to earn $1 to $5 per thousand impressions. So, if your blog gets 10,000 page impressions per month and your CPM is $1, you could expect to earn $10 per month.

There is also fixed advertising, where you set a fixed price for a set amount of time. The fixed price is based on the estimated amount of impressions. So, let’s say your blog has an estimated amount of impressions of 100,000 for 30 days and for that, the advertiser will pay $100.

Companies that offer CPM ads are Google DoubleClick and BuySellAds.

There are also private advertising companies, also known as network advertising, that specialize in a certain industry and they partner with blogs to display their clients’ ads across their network. Typically, you’ll need at least 10,000 to 100,000 impressions per month, dependent upon the advertising company.

Network advertising companies include Yoggrt and Fusion Ads.

Don’t forget you can have different ads on your website on different basis, i.e. banner ad at the top of the page that is CPC and on the sidebar navigation you have five (5) banner ads on a CPM basis. Remember, search engines like Google do not like ad heavy websites, so make sure you pick the right ad(s).

2. Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are also known as referral programs and they are the second most common and seen type of advertising for blogs. How you earn money from affiliate programs is simple, every time someone clicks on the ad and buys a product or service from the advertising company, you earn a commission; either a percentage or fixed amount of the sale.

There are companies that offer great commissions — in the hundred dollars range, but the expected amount you could earn can vary greatly. Typically, you want to join affiliate programs for companies you use. If people know you and your blog and they see that you are using company ABC, they will most likely choose that company, ABC. So, why not advertising them and earn a commission?

You can also join affiliate networks like CJ, LinkShare, ShareASale and Digital River.

3. Sponsored Blog Posts

It is common to receive requests from advertisers to publish a blog post that advertises their product or service. This is known as sponsored posts, advertorials or sponsored content. The amount you make varies and these advertisers usually offer you a very low amount to start; you’ll have to negotiate a more reasonable fee. Remember, you don’t want to do a lot of these, as it may turn-off your visitors and search engines may come to see your blog as spammy.

4. Email and Social Media Advertising

I previously talked about adverting on your blog, but you can also do the same for your email and your social media accounts. What you are doing is selling space on your newsletter or selling a post or tweet on your social media profiles. The amount you can earn is dependent on the amount of followers you have and possibly the average open rate of your newsletters.

5. Amazon Associates

Amazon also offers an affiliate program, known as Amazon Associates, where you can earn up to 10% — a minimum of 4% — on goods sold. Let’s say your blog post discusses how-to use Twitter’s Bootstrap, a front-end framework for websites, you could, at the bottom of the blog post or within the post itself, link to books that would be useful for the reader to expand their knowledge on Twitter’s Bootstrap. It’s a win-win for you and the reader.

6. Selling Your Blog

You can also sell your blog on a website like Flippa. The amount you can earn varies on the brand, the domain name, the amount of followers you have and the traffic you receive.

There is also DigitalPoint Forums, however, I would avoid them because they are known for users selling fake websites — scam postings, but it is an option you could use.

7. Freelancing

Why not advertise services? If your blog is about web design and development, why not offer web design services? You are receiving serious traffic now, so readers like your work and trust you, so they may want to work with you. Think of your blog like a resume!

8. Being Offered a Job

Make your blog your resume, as it shows what you know and what you can do and because of that companies may offer you jobs.

9. Books an eBooks

You can write a book or eBook and sell it. After advertising and affiliate programs, it is probably the third most common type of advertisement bloggers use to earn money. If you write a travel blog, write a book about how-to save money while travelling or how-to travel the world on X amount per day. If you stayed in a country for a substantial amount of time, write an eBook about moving there and life there; what can people expect when moving to a new country from someone who has done it!

10. Press or Presentations

Another way to earn money from your blog is from giving presentations at conferences or doing press trips (typically for travel bloggers). Even if you don’t earn money from your presentation, it could help you get more traffic and gain invaluable connections that could help you down the road.
